Why Study in Japan?
6 compelling reasons to choose Japan for your studies.
World-Class Education at a Fraction of the Cost
Japan has 50 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2025, including the University of Tokyo (32nd) and Kyoto University (50th). Annual tuition at national universities is a standardized ¥535,800 (~$3,600), while private institutions average ¥1.2 million (~$8,000)—far less than equivalent US or UK programs. This makes Japan a top-tier, affordable destination.
Global Leader in Innovation and R&D
Japan invests 3.3% of its GDP in research and development, one of the highest rates globally. It is a world leader in robotics, automotive engineering, AI, and biotechnology. Students gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge labs, with 23 Japanese Nobel laureates in science fields serving as a testament to the country's research environment.
Unmatched Safety and Quality of Life
Tokyo is consistently ranked as the world's safest city by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Japan's efficient public transport, universal healthcare system (with 70% government-subsidized medical costs for students), and exceptionally low crime rates provide a secure and comfortable environment for international students.
Generous Scholarships and Financial Support
The Japanese government's MEXT scholarship fully covers tuition, living expenses, and airfare for over 10,000 international students annually. Additionally, JASSO provides a monthly stipend of ¥48,000 (~$320) to thousands of self-financed students, making studying in Japan exceptionally accessible for Indian students.

Admission Requirements
Recognized Bachelor's Degree
A 4-year bachelor's degree from a recognized Indian university (UGC-approved) is required. For a 3-year BSc/BCom/BA, some universities may require a 1-year bridge course or a pre-master's program.
Research Plan or Statement of Purpose
For research-based master's and PhD programs, a detailed, specific research proposal (1,000-2,000 words) is the most crucial document. It must align with a potential supervisor's research area. Contacting professors in advance ('the Apriori Contact') is an unspoken rule.
Language Proficiency
For English programs: TOEFL iBT 85+ or IELTS 6.5+. For Japanese programs: JLPT N1 is often mandatory for humanities; N2 is accepted for some STEM fields. Many graduate schools now offer bilingual supervision.
Entrance Examination
Most graduate schools administer their own written entrance exam in the major field, followed by an oral defense of your research plan. These can sometimes be taken online from India.
Letters of Recommendation
Two academic references from university professors who can attest to your research capability and academic standing are standard. Professional recommendations are accepted for MBA programs.
Test Prep
Ace your standardized exams with free practice tests and study materials.

Visa Process
Obtain Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
This is the most critical step. Your accepting university in Japan applies for the COE on your behalf at the local Immigration Bureau. You provide them with your admission letter, proof of financial support, and passport copy. Processing takes 1-3 months.
Receive COE and Visa Application Form
Once approved, the university mails the original COE and a filled-out visa application form to you. The COE is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.
Gather Visa Application Documents
Prepare your valid passport, one passport-sized photo (4cm x 3cm), the original COE, the visa application form, and a copy of your admission letter.
Submit Application at the Japanese Embassy/Consulate
Submit your documents in person or through a recognized travel agent at the Japanese Embassy in New Delhi or the Consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, or Bengaluru. No appointment is usually needed for student visa submissions during peak season.
Visa Processing and Collection
Standard processing time is 5-7 working days. There is no visa fee for Indian nationals. You will be given a collection slip to pick up your passport with the visa sticker.
Receive Residence Card at the Airport
Upon landing at major airports (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu), your student visa sticker is activated, and you are immediately issued a 'Zairyu' (Residence Card). This is your primary ID in Japan.
