Why Study in United States?
6 compelling reasons to choose United States for your studies.
Unmatched Academic Flexibility
Unlike rigid systems elsewhere, U.S. universities allow you to explore multiple majors before declaring, with a 'liberal arts' approach that builds critical thinking. You can change your major even after 2 years, combine minors across disciplines like Computer Science and Philosophy, and design your own interdisciplinary degree at many institutions.
Global Dominance in Research & Innovation
U.S. universities receive over $80 billion annually in federal R&D funding. As an international student, you can participate in funded research from your sophomore year. The U.S. files more patents than any other country, and campuses like MIT, Stanford, and Caltech have spawned companies worth over $5 trillion combined.
Powerful Work Authorization: OPT & STEM Extension
The U.S. offers Optional Practical Training (OPT) allowing 12 months of full-time work in your field after each degree level. Crucially, STEM graduates (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) receive a 24-month extension, totaling 3 years of work authorization without needing H-1B sponsorship. This is a game-changer for ROI.
Diverse Campus Culture and Networking
With students from over 200 countries, U.S. campuses are global microcosms. You'll build a lifelong international network. Indian student associations are strong, celebrating Diwali and Holi on campus. Alumni networks are powerful—connections made here often lead to jobs, funding, and partnerships worldwide.

Admission Requirements
GRE/GMAT Scores
GRE is required for most MS/PhD programs (target 320+ for top 30). GMAT for MBA programs (target 700+ for top 20). Many universities now offer GRE waivers for applicants with strong undergraduate GPAs or work experience.
Statement of Purpose (SOP)
A critical, research-focused essay (500-1000 words) articulating your specific academic interests, why that particular program and faculty, and your career goals. Generic SOPs are rejected. Mention professors you want to work with by name.
Letters of Recommendation (LoRs)
Typically 3 LoRs from professors or professional supervisors who can attest to your research capability, academic rigor, and potential. For PhD applications, LoRs from known researchers in your field carry immense weight.
Research or Work Portfolio
For research-based programs, a CV detailing publications, conference presentations, and lab experience is essential. For professional programs like MBA or Data Science, 2-5 years of relevant work experience is often a prerequisite.
English Proficiency & Transcripts
TOEFL (90-100+) or IELTS (6.5-7.5+). Some top programs require higher, e.g., Harvard Business School requires 109 TOEFL. WES credential evaluation is mandatory for Indian 3-year bachelor's degrees to prove equivalency to a 4-year U.S. degree.

Cost Breakdown
Estimated annual expenses for international students in United States. All figures in USD.
Tuition (Public University)
$25,000 - $45,000/yr
State universities like UC Berkeley, UT Austin, or Michigan charge this for international undergraduates. Graduate tuition varies widely by program.
Tuition (Private University)
$45,000 - $65,000/yr
Private institutions like Harvard, Stanford, or NYU have a flat rate. STEM graduate programs at private schools often fall in this range.
Accommodation & Utilities
$8,000 - $18,000/yr
On-campus housing in a shared dorm is $8,000-$12,000. Off-campus shared apartments in cities like NYC or SF can cost $1,200-$2,000/month per person.
Food
$3,600 - $6,000/yr
University meal plans average $4,500/year. Cooking at home can reduce costs to $300/month. Eating out frequently will push this higher.
Health Insurance
$1,500 - $3,500/yr
Mandatory for all international students. University-sponsored plans are comprehensive but pricey. Waiver possible if you buy a compliant external plan, but check university rules carefully.
Books and Supplies
$800 - $1,500/yr
Renting digital textbooks, buying used copies, and using library reserves can significantly cut this cost. Engineering and medical books are the most expensive.
Transportation
$600 - $2,000/yr
Many universities provide free campus shuttles and city bus passes. Costs rise if you own a car (insurance, gas, parking). Budget for one trip home to India ($1,200-$2,000).
Personal & Miscellaneous
$2,000 - $4,000/yr
Covers mobile plan ($40-$70/month), clothing, laundry, entertainment, and personal care. This is highly variable by lifestyle and location.
